This blog is one for the ladies in honour of one of women’s greatest passions…. Shopping !!!
When travelling most women love to go shopping especially for souvenirs of their summer holidays.
So head out to Main Street as this is the centre of Gibraltar’s commercial district.
Gibraltar has a history of shopkeepers and traders that dates back to the 1800s when the Rock flourished as a trading port boosted by its strategic, geographic location. During this period the modern identity of the Gibraltarian people evolved through a mixed population of Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Jewish and Moorish communities.
Gibraltar remains home to many descendant families who established their businesses during this period and their shops are still visible in Gibraltar’s busy shopping centre.
Gibraltar is a VAT free jurisdiction so goods sold in Gibraltar offer the best value and the currency is the Gibraltar Pound, equivalent to Sterling, so there is no currency conversion for visitors from the United Kingdom. Many shops nowadays will also accept Euros but do check the exchange rate on the date you visit.

Along with the more traditional shops, visitors to Main Street will recognise international high street brands and chains. These sit alongside handicraft and souvenir shops.
Best buys include cosmetics and perfumery, jewellery, tobacco and spirits, designer glassware, specialist linens and electronics.
For souvenirs and a taste of local life, head to Casemates Square where you’ll find local artisan shops and the Gibraltar Crystal Factory, where you can watch the glass blowers at work.
Inaugurated in 1929, the Gibraltar Public Market just outside Casemates Square, is a traditional indoor market with a range of fish, fruit, vegetables and local delicacies
Main Street Gibraltar has been largely only for pedestrians ,remember to take a moment to admire the buildings that offer up a rich diversity, styled as they are in Portuguese, Spanish, Moorish, British and Genoan style and architecture.
Most of the buildings provide shops on the lower floors, while the upper floors of these interesting buildings offer a variety of different spaces, from residences to offices.
Irish Town, parallel to Main streetalso worth a visit,as are other side streets just off Main Street where you can find nice spots for a coffee or a bite to eat.
As always I must take the opportunity to remind you to book your Gibraltar tour with Gibraltar Rock Tours, Johnny will go out of his way to make sure your visit to the Rock is memorable one…. and point you towards the best shops is town !
Until the next time… enjoy your summer !
